Unification Church

Unification Church
A North Korean electrical engineering graduate, Sun Myung Moon (1920–) founded his church as God’s new religious vehicle in 1954. His followers are known derogatively as ‘Moonies’ because they believe their leader is the Second Coming. Moon chooses members’ marriage partners, who are usually unknown to one another. His mass marriage of 30,000 couples in 1992 is in The Guinness Book Of World Records. The religion is unpopular because its adherents are allowed to lie to raise money. The group uses ‘front’ names, such as ‘The Kensington Garden Arts Society’, ‘The New World Singers’ and ‘The International Conference on the Unity of the Sciences’.
